Missing a window costs you months. Grant programs run on two kinds of schedule:
- Continuous intake — apply any time (many federal programs, SR&ED via your tax return).
- Fixed windows — a specific open and close date, often once a year. CanExport's 2026–27 window ran Feb 4 to May 29. Ontario Trillium's Seed window ran July 22 to Aug 19, 2026. Miss it, wait a full cycle.
Some competitive programs are oversubscribed within hours of opening. And processing itself takes time — CanExport's service standard is 60 business days; IRAP can take months. So the real timeline is: window opens → you apply → weeks or months to a decision → then the work.
Build a calendar of the programs you're targeting, with their open/close dates, and prepare before the window opens so you can submit early.
The takeaway: treat deadlines as fixed and prepare ahead. The applicants who win are ready before the window opens, not scrambling when it does.
