Vague objectives kill otherwise-solid applications. When a reviewer can't see how success will be measured, they doubt the project is feasible.
Make every goal SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound. Compare:
- Weak: "We'll help local businesses grow."
- Strong: "We'll train 50 small businesses over 12 months, with 80% completing the program and 60% reporting revenue growth within six months, measured by follow-up survey."
The second gives the reviewer numbers, a timeline, and a way to verify. Include an evaluation plan — how you'll actually track progress toward each goal, with the specific metrics and tools you'll use.
The takeaway: replace ambition with numbers. Specific, measurable, time-bound outcomes plus a plan to track them is what makes a project look fundable.
