The single most common mistake in grant writing has nothing to do with writing. It's applying to the wrong program.
Every program has a mandate — a specific set of activities, industries, and outcomes it was created to fund. If your project doesn't fit that mandate, no amount of good writing will save the application. Reviewers can tell in seconds when someone has jammed their project into a grant it doesn't belong in.
The fix is to reverse the order most people use. Don't start by browsing grants and asking "what could I use this for?" Start with your project:
- What problem are you solving?
- What activities do you need to do?
- What's the outcome?
Once your project is clearly defined, match it against program mandates. The right grant is the one whose purpose already describes what you were going to do anyway.
